armed services committee. is the opposition to the nomination of chuck hagel as secretary of defense, is the opposition beginning to fade? >> we saw at least one senator last week make a statement, senator schumer but i notice not a lot of people rallied to join him and said fit is good enough for schumer, it is good enough for me. chuck hagel has questions to answer and one will be why is it the position you held in the past about iranian sanctions and our support for israel, no longer appear to be your positions? i'm going to meet with him this week and, the committee i'm sure in those hearings, i'll have questions there, as well. and look forward to the chance to talk to him about what he'd do. he's going to have a lot to say about our national defense for a long time. as the secretary of defense, at this time. if he becomes the secretary of defense. >> chris: senator blunt, thank you, thanks so much for coming in. always a pleasure to talk to you. up next the president takes a combative tone as he begins his second term. we'll ask our panel how this aggressive approach will work

uncomfortable." what does this say about it? you have come to terms with chuck hagel's nomination and to what he said. let's talk about that because he is having a confirmation hearing on the 3 1st, and you have endorsed him, or you have said at least you accept his apology. >> he said i look forward to hearing how he plans to fully implement the repeal of don't ask don't tell, and bring about equal benefits to all of our men and women serving and in uniform in this country. there is so much that secretary panetta could do here as he is ligue office to bring about equal benefits and there's certainly a number of things that it's my sincere hope that secretary panetta could fully bring about equal benefits. he has some time left to do that. there are a number of things that can be done before doma has been repealed, and what is left undone as that "new york times" article that you just referenced so eloquently put forth the next defense secretary, if senator hagel is, in fact, confirmed, i hope that on day one he will immediately move to insure equal benefits for those serving our country. >> wha

on these distant things. >> and there's this, a new anti-chuck hagel ad has just popped up days before senate hearings are set to start on his nomination as defense secretary. the ad is from a conservative group called americans for strong defense. at least five other groups from the right and from the left are all organizing to block hagel's nomination. first though shame on you, barack obama. it was one of hillary clinton's most notorious quotes when challenging her 2008 democratic opponent, then candidate obama later shot back calling his opponent, quote, likable enough. the two have come a long way since then in a jooint joint interview airing tonight on "60 minutes" the president says he'll miss clinton calling her the finest secretary of state ever and wishes she was sticking around. nbc white house correspondent peter alexander joining me live now. peter, secretary clinton leaves the administration. what can we expect from the relationship between these two over the next few years? >> well, craig, given the amount of money that goes into a presidential campaign, i think you could say t

against him if that, but he will be different next week when chuck hagel is the nominee for the defense secretary. that will be a lot more brutal as far as the q&a given his controversial positions. i suspect that hagel will be confirmed as well. >> let's talk about the two key personnel moves we are awaiting the announcement of at the white house about to come from the white house. tell us about that. >> mary jo white in new york spent years as the u.s. attorney and she is very, very tough. the president is going to nominate her to head the sec securities and exchange commission. that's going to be a major, major responsibility. this lady is very forceful in going after wrong doers. richard who has been the director of the consumer financial protection bureau as a recess appointment. he is going to be renominated for a full appointment by the period to the agency and tries to protect consumers. it was controversial the first time. we will see what happens now that the president has been reelected and bring both before the cameras right now and make this announcement. two very important

[cheers] and although i have got to admit that there are a little spiffied up right now, their heart and soul their dedication, their sense of duty is at one with every single one of the folks in kandahar right now. i want you to know that when i was standing on the steps of the capitol today looking ou

this perhaps, i think the hagel nomination is a shot at the neo con who's clearly did not want that. i think this is a direct frontal assault on a fixed position on the nra. very brave stuff he is doing. >> this president who stood there and said, we don't to have choose between investing in our kids and medicare. this is president who invented time travel. he has figured out how to travel into the future and steal our own children's money. and he did that. but yet he is the one saying that of course, republicans just took a shot at republicans for -- >> here's what i'm wondering. i hear you. i hear both of you. i wonder, this is a tactical shift. last go-around, he got pushed around so much by the republicans. this time he is going to do the pushing. and he knows, if he is going to have a legacy piece, if it is going to get the legislation that gets through, it will have to be deficits. nixon in china. who can reform entitlements but a democratic president. he is starting where he is. he is starting with the bases. he is not a progressive as a centrist. he is doubling down as a progressive.

in that regard. >> absolutely. i know chuck hagel. i think he is a strong, patriotic former senator and he will be a strong secretary of defense. i have dealt with him and and number of forays. he has been head of the atlantic council, some of the things and efforts to color senator hagel's approach on some of these things cannot do justice. i am going to come to it. i think it is important to think about it. when that initiative came out and we began to hear about the people who said let's get no nuclear-weapons, i scratch my head. i said how is that going to work? i find it hard to think how you can get down to a number in today's world. henry kissinger, jim baker, james schlesinger, many others have all agreed with that as a goal for the world. it is an aspiration. we should always be aspirational. but it is not something that can happen in today's world nor could any leader today sit here or in any other chair and promote the notion that we should be cutting down our deterrent levels before inadequate levels to maintain deterrence. the military has strong views about what that is. we h

chuck hagel from becoming our next secretary of defense. a new conservative group with anonymous donors called americans for a strong defense is running ads urging five democrats to vote against confirming hagel. another is called use your mandate. it is also new. it also has anonymous donors. it claims to be a liberal gay rights groups but buys its ad time through a republican firm. it has no web site and no physical address. it is, however using ads and mailers to call hagel anti-gay, anti-woman and anti-israel. this is part of a larger story in "the new york times" reporting at least five other groups are engaged in trying to block the president's choice. and the increase emergence of anonymous dollars and shady front groups is likely a result of citizens united. that 2010 decision that opened the floodgates to allow interested parties to inject endless outside money into our political campaign. >> i hate citizens united. >> me, too. npr reporting for the fives time today, google is posting its policies on what information it turns over to the government as part of an effort to win t

'll be important to them when they deal, for instance with the hagel nomination. so it was score one for hillary and i think it was an attempt to build on that and move beyond it and talk about her legacy as a whole rather than that event. >> chris: i want to pick up on that, brit. because, during the hearing, what struck me was the republicans were tough on hillary, on benghazi and the democrats weren't. but, both sides kept on saying what a great secretary of state she had been and to praise her service. and here's some of the points that have been brought up, some of her accomplishments. she helped assemble the bombing campaign in libya, to topple muammar qaddafi. she helped assembly the coalition that imposed the toughest sanctions ever on iran. and, she established diplomatic ties with burma. question, brit: how do you rate hillary clinton's performance, record as our top diplomat. >> i think those examples you cited would add up to a case for her competence. they do not add up to a case for greatness, after all, the groundwork on burma had been done by the previous administration and, the

of state, john kerry, and chuck hagel, which he has gone a lot of flak for it, to the secretary of defense? >> those are promising choices. john kerry may finally liberate himself with a push from chuck a goal. they are going to have to take on the military-industrial complex and reduce those mass of weapons systems that were designed for a soviet-peristyle hostility like the f-22 and nuclear subs. they're going have to cut the military budget down from its $800 billion, and get out of afghanistan and iraq. and whether they have the chemistry and the political fortitude to do so, it remains to be seen. but i think they are a better choice than their predecessors. i think john kerry will be better than hillary clinton, who had to be macho all the time. and panetta, chuck hagel will be better than panetta, who was kind of a fill in. and spent weekends back in california where he really wants to retire. there is a little promise there. but again, it requires the resurgence of mass demonstrations in washington this spring to develop a convergent policy from the militarization of foreign-policy

tuesday. he will be sworn in as secretary of state next wednesday. chuck hagel to head up the funds and j-- head up defense and jack lew as secretary of state. >> i think chuck this is the steepest climb to his nomination. even before it was officially announced, a lot of members on both sides coming out. there were so many republican members, and he is a former senator republican member from nebraska. even members of his own party coming out in opposition. i think he will face a tough time. jack lew i think will also be of the cross hairs. he was sort of the president's point man when it came to the fiscal issues on capitol hill. we have seen through the spending fights that jack lew was the guy to rankle the different positions and bring everyone to some type of agreement and avert disaster. what is funny is the same goodwill he was able to build up through a lot of the past spending fight seems to be gone and a lot of his defenders on the other side of the aisle are coming out against him. yes, there is a lot of talk of a fresh start, but both sides are very much in campaign mode. that

, and chuck hagel seems to be okay with sequestrati sequestration, there's a lot of questions in the military and we need bold leaders who are going to set a straight course and focus on fighting and winning wars is what we're compelled to do. >> megyn: thank you for indulging me, as somebody who has never put on a uniform. didn't have the other side here today so i appreciate it. >> no problem. >> megyn: all the best. thanks for your service. up next, growing concerns that american ingenuity is being sold to one of the country's top competitors. and china could get their hands on designs for military application. so...how'd it go? well, dad, i spent my childhood living with monks learning the art of dealmaking. you've mastered monkey-style kung fu? no. priceline is different now. you don't even have to bid. master hahn taught you all that? oh, and he says to say (translated from cantonese) "you still owe him five bucks." your accent needs a little work. starts with arthritis pain and a choice. take tylenol or take aleve, the #1 recommended pain reliever by orthopedic doctors. just two aleve

independent line. actually, we will go to kentucky on the democratic line with c.e. caller: >> chuck hagel and john kerry stepping into these positions, they can bring their experiences to the table because they have fought insurgents. the only way we will be able to kill the republic is to kill the umpire -- empire. they started this in afghanistan. putting all kinds of money into that pit. just bled them. and we're doing the same thing now. we need to sacrifice the empire to save the republic. , south ken from lancaster carolina, on our independent line. what is your take on the role of the united states and the world stage? caller: i would like to respond about secretary clinton. you can look at benghazi, the ambassador got killed. egypt is in turmoil. she has not done nothing really. now talking about gs-7 the% rating -- that she has a 70% rating? all these politicians being recycled. leon panetta worked in the clinton administration. recycled politicians, they never want to leave. a 69-year-old lady running for president. i would vote for anybody else. her job as secretary of state wa

. i think he's put together potentially a very good team. i think kerry and hagel and brennan and in a curious way now as the presidential adviser, but his very much interest in affairs with a team that's going to focus more on the problems on the ground. that is to say basic fundamental strategic challenges that are confronting us. mrs. clinton was terrific. i like her. i respect her. she was enormously energetic. but she had more of a visionary agenda, global warming, global problems, suffering, injustice, jends jendser gender issues, rheau is rights. >> all extremely important. >> but if we don't deal with the problems confronting us right now, we'll never get to dealing with the big problems in the end. so i am hoping that this new team will really address serious problems that obama didn't finish addressing. >> the theory of the case for this new team now because the reality is that we're going through a transition into a post-superpower world. we are still a superpow er, but there comes a point where we're not. and if you study obama and look at him, he wants to avoid wa
